Outdoor Markets – Fatted Newsletter

Am told it is officially summer, spring is gone. The Farmer’s Market over the last month has really grown, when compared to over the winter (der). I enjoy seeing the changes because it gets continually better and better. Now is a great time to go see what is available. Don’t lose your mind though, you have to be wise in your Shopping Fu just as you do at the local grocery chain. For instance, the peaches (many vendors have them now) are charging $3.50 + a pound for the orbes of wonder. Yeah, they’re really good. But $3.50 a pound is too damned much, sorry. Last week I bought some wonderful 5 seed crusty bread, baked that morning. It was absolutely delightful, if you don’t mind paying $4.50 a loaf. I did find someone who reminded me of Ted Nugent at a little card table sharpening knives for $5 bux a piece. Tomorrow I’m going to take my poultry shears and a few cooks knives in for a touch up. He uses a stone only, no wheels. This is a good thing, one doesn’t want to take too much metal off the poor blades. Anyway, if you have the time take an hour or so and check out your local Farmer’s Market, please do. And speaking of which, here is Fatted Calf’s weekly newsletter (MORE CREPINETTES !!!!!!!!! YEEEHAW);

This Week at The Market
Are you settling into Summer? We are. The crazy ups and downs of Spring Fever and sometime uncertainty are slowly giving way to those Perfect Three Months. Or, as they are sometimes known: June, July and August. Yep, we are primed and ready for good weather (OK, we know we live in the Bay Area, but still), long days, playing hooky, and evenings spent drinking wine and cooking outdoors. You know where we’re going with this, don’t you? Summertime is sausage time. Meat time. Picnic time, and Taylor the Butcher has so many exciting things planned for this Summer. We can’t go into too many details just yet, but let’s just say that the words “summer” and “sausage” will be where they rightfully belong, right next to each other. And when we talk about how Taylor’s been smoking a lot this summer, it might not be what you first think. To tide you over until that deliciousness begins, there are the enduring Crepinettes, this week featuring pork, orange and pimenton. Happy, happy Summer.

  2. Crepinettes with orange and pimento? Mmm,I think I’ll light up the que myself for that. Ummm… once I learn how.

  3. Which breads is it that you be wantin’, BB? The ones in the photo ( I make ’em) or the other yummy-licious, seeded bread from the Farmer’s market?

  4. Yo, Henge, I want YOUR oven bread yummies!
    My chum here wants one of your Breakfast Burritos, minus any Bell peppers.

  5. And some fresh-squeezed orange juice! And muffins! And steak and eggs with onions! And sliced peaches! And sausage and potato pancakes!

  6. This is the last request and I will refrain from spamming up your website. Don’t bother to call security!
    Chicken fried steak and hashbrowns. Fresh salsa-egg scrambles… and of course freshly ground Colombian righteousness. Bless you both. xoxoxo
