I’ve been working at the same company now for a bit over 14 years. I like that part, but as cool as it might seem, consider the fact I’ve been eating at the same places for lunch all this time. So, when I overhear someone talking about a semi-local place I haven’t been to and it sounds worth while, I’m outta here. Within a few minutes Big D was here and we were OFF.
First, you’ll notice the building doesn’t quite fit in with a stupid suburban, along a major artery, type of cafe. It was put together from a Log Cabin Kit from a Sears & Roebuck Catalog in the 1930s. Spiffy, eh?
It’s not a really large building, but with a peaked roof it doesn’t seem cramped at all. Maybe because there’s an addon (I’m supposen’) room for the kitchen and storage. The kitchen area is clean, neat and well put together. It’s inviting and I have to say, I don’t find too many commercial kitchens I find “inviting” (the stove had red knobs, I love red knobs). There were good smells about, along with purdy music (no kenny g). The entire front of the building is loaded with windows so there’s plenty of light for newspaper reading. The wait staff and cook seem to be in decent moods, work is moving along nicely. We didn’t have to wait long, prolly cause we were one of only a few people there.
I ordered the breakfast scramble, didn’t say what it was exactly. But after looking over the menu, one double sided piece of nice paper in a plastic sleeve, I could see it really didn’t matter what I ordered, these people care. The breakfast arrived and filled the plate nicely. They use REAL bread with REAL butter, the eggs had cheese in’em, little rounds of sausage and artichoke hearts all came together perfectly. The cheese wasn’t overwhelming, not even a little. Home fries were seasoned just right. I had hot sauce, salt & pepper ready. Didn’t use any of those, not on my food today. Nope.
Big D pounced on the Salmon Patty Burger rig, came with a really nice tall green salad. The greens were bright and the tomatoes were RED. That’s right, red. All red. Not some red with splotchy green. They were red tomatoes. D remarked several times how good the dressing for the salad was. I din’t have any, so I don’t really know. He could have been lying to me.
Hey folks, THAT’S NOT ALL !!! Out the back door you’ll find a nice little covered patio area that looks out over their garden & yard area. It’s been raining off and on over the last 24 hours, so there was nobody back there and it was quite drippy. Down over to the left is the veggie & herb garden, I imagine that makes it in to the menu from time to time. I like that idea. Food in the back growing, food served up front.
To sum it all up, we have a really nifty old building which houses a cafe that’s been around for maybe 7 years who serves high quality, easy on the tummy & wallet (about 20 bux before tip for two meals) and offers garden fresh vegies during parts of the year.

Big D here ~ yeah ~ the one who could have been “lying” about the salad dressing!! No Way, there was a delightful balance of sweetness that complimented the fresh veggies. Let me just say “YUMMM”. Dr.Biggles forgot to mention how cool the cook was. While he was leaning against a pot rack, having a conversation . . . with his free hand, he would grab an egg, crack it into a bowl, throw out the shell and repeat. So, without looking he was cracking eggs with one hand and being very productive!! Put this place on your list of places for breakfast and lunch (not sure if they serve up dinner).
Big D
Nope, no dinner. Breakfast served all day and lunch.
The kitchen was awesome. I want one like that.
We’ll have to try it again, cuz Meathead hated it.
But I think we went on a Sunday morning or something. They were really crowded and the food was extra oily in grease that had been used all morning. Black stuff in yer eggs, yo.
But a weekday lunch sounds good. If I can talk him into it.
Holy carp! How come I ain’t never seed dat place in Albany befo’. You’re gonna hafta swing by ‘n treat me to lunch.
I’m drooling in my yoghurt. mm….cheese eggs.
UPDATE: 6/29/2005
Big D and I went today and have been doing off and on since this review. The food is still solid, dependable and really tasty. They have specials each day and fresh scones, yum. Plus, this time of year the garden patio is open and it’s SO NICE !!! Go if you can.
