I don’t know. However, I can tell you where not to go, retinning.com.
I’m so mad, evil bucktoothed mad. Crazy, evil, bucktoothed, out of my mind, shaking mad. Got it?
Listen up, for the first time I’m going to swear on Meathenge. So, cover your tender eyes and ears.
I’m really p.o.’d. These lameass fucktards received my most coveted favorite fry pan of all time on 4/28/2005, says so on my invoice. They wrote up the invoice on 5/27/2005 (that’s 1 month later in case you’re wondering), how do I know? Says so on my invoice. I called, usually just rang and rang. I wrote a few letters asking where my pan was and could they please return my pan. I received a 3″ toy pan in late August, nice for melting a teaspoon of butter or an ash tray. Where the heck is my 8″ 3mm solid copper FRY PAN ?!?! I called and wrote letters and returned the ash tray (2 mm thickness).
Keep in mind, they never called, wrote, faxed, nothing. Sure, but they cashed my 60 dollar check on the spot! How convenient for them.
Guess what rolled in the other day? It’s early November, by the way. An 8″ fry pan that resembles mine, but I don’t remember putting a sharp divot IN THE BOTTOM OF MY SOLID COPPER FRY PAN !!! Plus the tin is slopped over the edges, all messy. Sure I should be happy to have my pan back and I am. But waiting nearly 7 months and receiving zilch for communication blows whale snot. Screw you Atlantic Retinning, you’ve left a bad taste in my mouth, PAHTOOEY !!!
Damn, too bad he’s out in New Jersey. It’d be worth taking a trip to his shop if he was closer. I go to Oregon this weekend for the NSU and bacon. Want any? It might make you feel better.
You go to Oregon and bring back bacon, go now.
Jersey,
I know some flat nosed people in jersey ~ yuse wants mi ta git en tuch wit dem?
Big D
Did you get a refund or anything? File a Better Business report against them or something along those lines.
Hey Nick,
No refund for anything AND I paid to ship that ash tray back.
Better Business, good thinkin’. I’ll go have a look.
Biggles
Yow. I hope they used real tin, not mercury!
(I think I know now why you’re not crazy about your Le Creuset, BTW.)
I leave Friday for Oregon. I’m picking up an NSU Supermax motorcycle for a friend of mine in SF, so delivering bacon to you wouldn’t be a problem. Any ideas on what I should find for you?
Sorry to hear about it. What a bunch of jerks. I agree that the BBB is a good idea. They usually are pretty effective. I actually filed one once.
Hey Cookie,
Why do I not like my le creuste fry pans?
They suck for most everything, but that’s just me. It’s a specialty pan and I don’t have time for that.
Biggles
Hey Dave,
First off, make sure you roll in early enough in the day to give yourself time to shop. They probably close up tight about 5pm or so.
Then, take a look at the bacon and cured stuff. See if you can find something you aren’t used to seeing. Shoulder bacon? Bacon? Get 5 lbs or just take everything they have. We don’t need FRESH meat, smoked/cured.
And above all, ASK !!! “What you gots?” Talk to the people and let them know what you’re up to. There are many times where butchers will stash the good stuff for people who care, show you care and can endure the meat love.
You will walk away happy.
Hey Kalyn,
Excellent and thanks for backing me up. Everyone needs support, don’t you think?
Doc,
That sucks big time! I’ve got friends in New Jersey, but they’re mild-mannered Jews unless the subject is mathematics (when she deviates from her standard and gets mean) or editing (when he’s liable to viciously cut unneccessary verbiage) using his dripping red sword — I mean pen.
That’s bitter! I’m so sorry to hear it!
Maybe you forgot to add in your letter, “How about I come there and fit all y’all with some pretty cement shoes so I can take you for a nice walk at the bottom of the river.”
or we could all send them our porn spam? Let us know.
xo
Hey Shuna,
Heh, yeah. Unless they’re bigger than me. In that case, I’ll just continue to hurl obscentities from three thousand miles away.

Thanks for the warning. Retinning.com is the first site that comes up when you Google “retinning.” I have a couple of copper pans from my mother and was considering shipping them off to Jersey. Hah! That’ll never happen. Those people sound evil. Hopefully, you’re site’s review of their “services” will come up first after the Google bots come visiting. If you ever do find someone who retins (and will fix your pan), let me know.
Hey Brett,
Yeah huh, that’s why I sent mine there. Top O’ Google.
Not sure what the scoop is on those guys.
I’m going to do what I should have done in the first place. Find a local restaurant like Chez Panisse and find out where they send their pans.
It’s kinda like finding a good chrome shop. Find out where the local HA’s take their parts to be chromed and use them. There’s no way they’d screw up a Hells Angel’s chrome.

I would like to invite all of you to our website http://www.rockymountainretinnig.com. We specialize in retinning copper cookware for the past 30 years. We pride ourselves in our workmanship and customer service. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
Thank you, Peter Undiks
Hey Peter,
Thanks for stopping by! My 3 quart sauce pan is looking a little shabby. I’ll send it out after the holidays and see what you guys can do with it. Take care!

Wow, it’s great to read all these comments. I have my mother’s fabulous set of copper pans, which desperately need retinning. For years I’ve wondered how to get that done. Please keep us informed on how this all works out for you.

I sent several of my thick walled copper pots that we purchased in France to retinning.com. They kept them for at least eight months. I also called and faxed multiple times usually with no or, at best, some cryptic responce. When they finally returned the pots they had replaced several loose rivits in the handles with other various connectors, none of which matched the origianls. And the tinning work wandt that good, they are now ready to be retinned again. I am going to try the Rocky mountain people.
When I was in Seattle last summer, the big cookshop in Pikes Market knew of several locations that would do re-tinning but I forgot the names.
Hey Mike,
Thanks for stopping by. I’ve been in email communication from Peter at Rocky Mountain. While I haven’t tried their service yet, Peter is at least responsive and their web site is far nicer than retinning.com.
Surely there are places to have your pots retinned all over the darned place. But they obviously don’t go out of their way to let the world know. So, we do what we can and keep trying. I’ve got a decent 3qt sauce pan that needs retinned. I’m going to send it out to Peter within the week or so. Take care,
gp
So glad to read about your experience with Atlantic, and wish I’d known sooner… because I’m in the middle of a similar “dispute” with them. Sent them 2 pans in May — one a gorgeous oval Bongusto casserole abt 40 years old. Same story: cashed my check right away, never called, never notified — keep telling me (when they DO actually answer the phone) that it “will be sent out next week” — or that someone will “look into it and call you tomorrow” (which of course they never do. Lately I’ve been calling and asking for the guy I was told is “the boss” (named Giboons), but he seems never to be there when I call. Any interest in a common complaint to the NJ Better Business Bureau? I can’t believe we’re the only victims.
I’ve been waiting 8 months. Outrages. Let’s discuss some sort of clss action, or letter to the State Attorney General, or something.
Hey Alice,
Thanks for stopping by and sorry to hear about your pans. I’m going to pack up one of my sauce pans and send it out to rockymountainretinning.com. Peter seems real nice, I’ll do that next week for sure.
We most certainly need to contact the BBB, what Atlantic is doing is so farking wrong.
I hope your get your pans back, period.

I’ve actually just purchased and received via Fed-ex yesterday 1/24/06 my “first” set of Copper 3mm sauce pans (Beautiful!!) from Peter Undiks @ Rocky Mt. Re-tinning. I have to say what a CLASS ACT!!!! Peter is one of the most professional individuals I have ever encountered on-line! If you look at the quality of his web-site I don’t think any of us can go wrong giving him our business.
Sorry to read about your experience with Atlantic. Sometimes we experience a bad situation in order for something good to come out of it!!!
Hey Julie,
Now this is good news! Excellent and thank you for stopping by.
I had the same thoughts about Rocky Mt too. I’ve got a little frypan I want to send out, just to see. So busy haven’t had time, dangit.

I’m in NYC, and used Atlantic a few times many years ago when they were on 26th St. Went to the shop myself for delivery and p/u . I thought the work was decent…though the tin seems a bit scant…wears away too fast. I had the impression that there is only one guy doing all the work. When they moved to NJ, I tried somewhere else, can’t remember who, but scary-creepy place, the work didn’t get done, and two months later I made my husband go with me to get my family pots back. Ended up calling Atlantic again. The same guy from 26th St came to my door for p/u, and returned them, in a few days, again done acceptably, but not great. What was really wierd was that he had told me not to call the shop, I should wait for him to call when they were done. It seems to be hard to find a good tinner. Anyway, now I;m going to try Metalman Restoration in Mt. Vernon. Trying to stay on the east coast. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Biggles, I was just reading about how you cursed Atantic Retinning. Gibbons has been doing retinning for over 15 years. I’m sorry you were not satified with your finished product. First, of all it takes a while to retin a pot. I have done lots of my pots retinned and polished by them and the work was always great. We would like things done fast as possible but some things take time. They have been through a lot they had to do a big move last year from NY to NJ. Also, UPs was on strike so. Gibbons is a honest working man just trying to make a living. He will always let you if the job will take longer than expected and tell you like it is. His prices for more than fair. I know he uses real tin and you are not suppose to put the flame too high on your pots or the tin will fade away faster.
Hey Christine,
I’m glad you stopped by and offered up a different opinion. This post and comments are all available from Google and your comment will stand for all time.
Normally when I review a place, person or thing and wasn’t impressed I’ll try it again later and see how it goes. But I absolutely refuse to send out my valuable copper pans to ‘test’ the service.
You may want to reread my post and see exactly what happened and I believe all this was before his move. My phone calls were greeted with nothing more than a few grunts with words tossed in. My letters were unanswered and waiting 6 to 7 months to have a pan returned is crazy talk. My check was cashed right away, it took them a month to invoice the pan and then after 5 some odd months, they returned someone else pan to me. While this can be viewed as a mistake that can happen to anyone, remember they number each pan with the invoice number along with a written description of the pan. I sent them a 3mm 8″ pan and they returned a 3″ toy. It took them over a month or two after that to return my pan. The tin had slopped over the edges and down the copper sides and the handle had rusted.
And as you can see in the comments, I’m not the only one that’s found the same.
That being said, I hope Gibbons is doing well and his family healthy.

Atlantic Retinning has had my pan since November. Totally unresponsive to my phone calls. Most times no one answers, the very few time they did they refused to investigate whether they had my pan. I was told bluntly to call back. I did so with no answer. Now(June) I get a message that there will be no contact until some person returns in July. The pan sent is a 40 yr old wedding present. I counsel caution until more satisfactory reports appear on this site.
Hey Mel,
My heart goes out to you. A person left a comment a few months ago and for whatever reason, I was able to find their email. It seems as though they may or may not have pull at Atlantic. I’ve sent them an email asking for help, any help. If you’re reading this, please leave me your email. DrBiggles (at) cyberbilly (dot) com

Added information. My daughter was in the area of Atlantic Retinning two weeks ago and I asked her to go by an retrieve my pan. She reported the building appeared abandon with broken glass and uncared for exterior. She was afraid to venture in since she had children with her. Not encouraging.
Mel
Hey Mel,
If you look a few comments up you’ll see Christine Washell left a comment mentioning A Retinning had moved last year. Did you daughter visit NY or NJ? She says he’s now in NJ.
I don’t remember where I sent my pan, but I thought it was NJ and that was several years ago or more. I dunno.
Let’s all have a quiet moment and wish your pan well.
Biggles
Thank god that I happened upon this site just now, as I was going to send my Ruffoni copper pan to these people. I’m in NJ as well, the web site looked as though they were really a professional outfit. If they were good enough for Williams Sonoma ….
So now this news ! Wonder if it’s worth retinning this pan; why would the tin be wearing away after a short year? Is that normal ?
Thanks for any help, and sorry for just barging in !
Regards,
Dee
Hey Dolores,
You’re welcome to barge in any time!
I haven’t tried yet, but please give http://www.rockymountainretinning.com a try. I’ve chatted with the owner via email a few times and they seem far better and safer. Their web site is real nice too.
Tin lined pans can be tricky to use. And yes, depending on use, they can need retinning that soon.
Don’t use high heat, never preheat the pan, cold oil cold pan, that type of stuff. I use mine only for critical dishes or when I want a special pork chop.
I say, retin it!
Oh you are so gracious, Dr. Biggles, thank you !
I do really want to have my pan retinned because I just love it.. and it’s far far better than the very expensive ALL-Clad copper fry pan that bought not too long ago.
But what are you saying…
‘Not use my copper pot every day’…:-( you might as well rip my heart out;it’s my favorite pot !! Pot as luxury item ??
I saw another Ruffoni pot (Item number: 170012511059) up for bids on ebay, the bid is in 4hours, and that will be a back-up pan. So far the bid is at $76; far less than the $200 it goes for at W Sonoma. And I found a lid for it at another auction, so wish me luck that I win both !
I will take your advice and have a look at the site that you recommended, maybe my pot will get to travel!
Looked at copper pots in Belgium, thinking they’d be cheaper there..not a chance More $$$ than here…
Thank you So much !
Hey Dolores,
Well, it seems as though you and I are in the same boat. It isn’t about the cost or fussyness of the pan, it’s about performance. What this means is, we use what makes us smile. And the end result is we get the pan retinned every year.
While I don’t use my tin lined coppy fry pan frequently, the sauce pans do get heavy use. I find myself using my cast iron fry pans most frequently. Soon following are the stainless rigs.
Oh, and have fun on ebay. It’s a great place to find the bits and pieces you’ll need!
Biggles
Hi Dr Biggles; I won my big Ruffoni pot on eBay, so I wasn’t in a big hurry to send my ailing one to be re-tinned.
However, there might be another place for re-tinning, a place called ‘Fantes’ in Philadelphia, with whom I’ve dealt very satisfactorily before..and they are very reasonable I think, charge $ 3.50 per inch to r-tin, and $10.00 shipping.
Have a look at their site…it’s a candy store for me !

Dolores

Update on Atlantic Retinning. In answer to your question about the earlier post, it was the New Jersey address that my daughter visited. I have called a number of times and about two months back finally talked to a person who thought they remembered my pan. I told him since they had cashed my check I really wanted my pan back with a refund or retinned. He said to wait it will come. Two months hence and no pan.
Hey Mel,
Wow, that’s really pathetic and am sorry about your pan. I know you’ve waited longer, but mine took 7 months. I believe after my last call it took 2 months to get the pan. This was after they sent me the wrong pan.
I’ve dropped the ball though too. I was supposed to have sent in a pan to rockymountain retinning 9 months ago to see how they are. Maybe I should get that going, eh?
Biggles
They did such a great job with my 10″ skillet that I have sent a second pan to the fine folks at Rocky Mountain Retinning. Plus they are less expensive than Atlantic.

I work for a company called Oregon Retinners. I think they do a great job on retinning, but I am partial to the company. Herb has been hand tinning copperware for about 40 years and is excellent! The price is $3.50 a dia inch and that includes tinning and polishing. http://www.retinners.com or 800-547-7014.

Website has a great discussion. I live in Harrisburg, PA and also have a home in Ocean City New Jersey so a retinner in the Newark area is a real temptation. I have three pots and three frypans, all with acorn lids which were fabricated nearly 40 years ago by Fritz Holtzhauser of Wilmington DE. I also have one more modern machine made pot all of which require retinning. The Holtzhauser fabrications are dearly loved, were heavily used and indeed may have even been abused by a spouse or former SO.
Ideally I would like to find a tinsmith within driving proximity so that I can look into the recipient’s eyes before entrusting my babies. I can’t believe that in a state like Pennsylvania, I am not finding any traditional crafts people that I would feel comfortable using. I know Fante’s in Philadelphia but their store is a very nice retail cookware store so they probably sub the work out to someone else. I want to know who is actually doing the work. The site has already kept me from making a horrible mistake. If anyone can solve my problem in a way where I will have the psychological comfort I crave, I will be deeply grateful.

I have several B Waldow Copper from brookyln, NY pans in need of Re- tinning.
What is the cost of re-tinning and are these pots worth the cost of re-tinning?
Hey Kim,
It depends on the pots and the condition. Are they something you’ll use? Or are they along the lines of a 3″ fry pan?
The cost of retinning depends on the company and the size of the pan. There are several retinning sites listed in these comments, give them a visit.

Atlantic has had three of my copper posts since December 2006. They cashed my check in March. Haven’t heard back from them after repeated phone calls. Never a person on the phone, just an answering machine. The Better Business Bureau complaint from is sitting next to me and will be sent out tomorrow. A check of the BBB site shows fourteen complaints in the last 36 months. All are listed as resolved. It’s probably best to find somewhere else to have your re tinning done.

I was surprised to read about all the problems people had with ATLANTIC. I had similar problems about two years ago. Poor work, not responding to calls, taking forever to complete the job etc. I thought I was the only person to have problems with this outfit!!!
Hey John,
No you’re not and it’s pretty darned pathetic. It makes me mad that someone would do that to someone else, it’s plain rude.

Hello,
My name is Rick Myers. I’m a long time friend of Jamie Gibbons and a new associate with him and his company, Atlantic Retinning. I was reading through your blog and regret to see the bad experiences that some of you have had with our company.
I’ve recently been asked by Jamie to join him and assist in business operations and customer relations. That is why I’m writing on this blog. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify and hopefully resolve some issues which some of you have with our company.
As I said, we regret the unsatisfactory service that some of you have received and it is our aim to rectify things and make any resolutions that we can. First, let me say that I offer no excuses for any poor service that that you’ve received. A company has an obligation to its customers regardless of circumstances that make quality service difficult. Additionally, communication is critical when problems arise.
I can tell you that the company, and Mr. Gibbons in particular, had run into number of difficult circumstances which prevented us from accomplishing the type of service that we desire to provide for all of our customers. We apologize for the resultant inconvenience and frustration this has caused, and for the inadequate communication concerning your orders during this time.
Our reputation of providing quality workmanship and service has been long standing and very positive. Such a hard-earned reputation is very important to us, and is not the result of the type of experiences you have mentioned here. We want to consistently provide the quality of service that has satisfied so many of our long standing and high profile customers.
It has always been Mr. Gibbons’ desire to provide quality workmanship and service in a timely fashion and we regret wherever this goal has not been met.
Because of this, we would like to extend an offer to any of you who’ve written on this blog to this point about your experience with us, to allow us the opportunity to provide you with a free service of the kind and quality that you have every right to expect from any company that you do business with. We hope this gesture of goodwill will help to reestablish a level of trust with our company that will enable us to do more business in the future.
Specifically, we are offering to provide to you, free of charge, the retinning of any pan 12 inches or smaller. We will put these items on priority status with a guaranteed turnaround time of three weeks and we will do so free of any shipping charge whatsoever.
We hope that you will take us up on this offer and allow us to demonstrate the kind of quality workmanship and customer service that we are capable of and aim to always have as the standard of our business. In doing so you will receive some small compensation for your unsatisfactory experience in the past, alleviate any bad taste left by those experiences, and also allow us to improve our reputation among you and among all who will do business with us in the future.
Please understand this apology and this offer are extended with all sincerity. If you would like to accept or if you have any further questions or comments, we welcome them. I can be reached by email at retinningcs@att.net.
Sincerely,
Rick Myers
I agree with the favorable results from Rocky Mountain Retinning. Sent several of my pots to him a few years back with good results. The fact that I haven’t needed his services since for cookware I use daily says loads. I purchased 2 sets of new saucepans from him within the past few months. They are exactly as stated on his website. These are made in his shop from some castings which appear to be french or possibly italian. This is the only cookware he sells as far as I know, and I think that there is a finite quantity. They are wery well finished with good copper rivets and good tinning and polishing. If you call his shop, he generally answers the phone and has always given me straight answers. At Christmas I talked to him about my second set of saucepans, for a gift, and he said that he could not deliver before Christmas. Ordered anyway and they arrived about a week before Christmas. He did not cash my checks until the work was completed.
Interesting comments. I had a similar (horrible) experience with Atlantic a couple of years ago. Took forever to get my pan returned and when it was, Atlantic had engraved a number on it that couldn’t be polished out. Never again! Appears Rocky Mountain may be the place to go.
Hey Paul,
Don’t quote me, but I believe that number is a standard deal. No matter what happens, any retinning master can locate your pan out of hundreds.

FYI…after a lot of research including this blog, I ended up sending my pots to the Metal Coating Company in Lima OH http://www.metalcoatingcompany.com/ Their website is not much, but their service is exceptional. I’ve now sent two separate orders and received them back in less than 3 weeks. The work is superb.
My wife is a professional-level chef with 50+ copper pots mostly acquired in Europe from Delherinn in Paris. She’s used the retinned pots and has now sent a 3rd batch for retinning.
Their prices are reasonable and their customer service person, Sandi, is always available and knows what’s going on with your order.
I HIGHLY recommend them.
I sent a large pot to these people, metal coating co. in Lima, OH and was not at all satisfied with their work.. I “think” I can see copper through the thin tin. Would NOT use them again. This was around 2011.

Hi
I’m from New Zealand and I’m trying to find out about a brand of cookware called Orogen 1, which I have not come across in my country before. I have a feeling it might be American, but can’t find any info on it from the internet. Can anyone help with any info on the company, if it is a quality brand etc?
thanks
Melissa
Open Letter to James Gibbons of Atlantic Retining of late New York now in Oakhurst New Jersey. Around June of 2002 I gave you 6 various sized copper pots to sell on consignment.I have called you numerus times in New York and Newark. Spoke to your workman and have left many mesages. No return call and no pots returned.
You were soposed to be a friend since we lived in the same area for many years and new you when you were in school with my Daughter Jill. You had a reptuation for not being on the up and up and I did not believe it since you alway treated me fairly when you were in the Antique business. I have since given up on you since I moved to Florida and the cost of a law suite is not worth the effort.
I will close with the saying MAY THE BLUEBIRD OF HAPPINESS FLY UP YOUR NOSE.
Jules Karasik Florida.
I have used Rocky Mountain Retinning and most recently Metal Coating Company in Lima OH http://www.metalcoatingcompany.com/
Both have done excellent work at fair prices. I’ve called Nicholas Retinning in Los Angeles but he always quotes a price that is at least twice what others charge. I plan to try Lambert Gonzalez next because I’d like to support a New Orleans business and I’ve seen his excellent work at New Orleans antique store Lucullus. As noted above, he’s at (504)595-5074
If you have trouble contacting Lambert Gonzales, you can contact him through Lucullus 504 928 5620,
or you can email me, and I’ll get a message to him. I’m his ex, and a champion of his work.

Several years ago, I too, had send several pans to Atlantic. It took months and months. I had the same experience and thought my pans were gone! I’m so glad I checked here today because I need to have other pans retinned – boiled off the tin of a little pot when I set it on high heat to get the water boiling for 4 eggs – left the room – and POW – the eggs popped and the tin was mostly gone!
I had purchased the pan in an estate auction to match another one I have. I’m going to try Metal Coating Co. in Lima, Ohio and see what happens this time. Many thanks for all the info. Onward!
I just happened upon this site today, after looking for years for someone to do re-tinning. I appreciate all of the comments about the good and the bad ones, as it will keep me from making the same mistake that some of you have made. Will post input about my own experience after I have re-tinning done. New Orleans is the closest to me, so I may give him a try. Many, many thanks!!!
Listen I don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I think Mr. Gibbons does a great job, and yes it took along time but when I got my pieces back from him I was blown away! I noticed I also had a few drips on the inside of my pot, but that’s how I know its been done by hand. After reading some of these comments I felt very upset. Have some patience people! I don’t know any other company that does Martha Stewart’s pots.
Too bad I did not see this site before.. My stew pot is now stuck at Atlantic and is “ONLY” 1 month overdue. Guess I better be prepared for a long stint. This is a pot I used a lot.
Good news for copper pot users, they are now using stainless to line the pots.I just pick up a Mauville sauce pan and must say the performance is the same as a tinned pot.
Let’s see now.. I got a hold of these people finally and was promised a delivery date in March. The date came but the pot never did. I also got a family problem story. After numerous calls, I got a Jamie who promised the pot in late April.. Still no pots and it seems they are not picking up their voice messages anymore.
@David, how long did it take to get your pot? You don’t understand what all the fuss is about? Are you living in this world? Be thankful you got your pot back, and I dare you to send him another piece.
I have been looking for a place to re-tin my antique mold. I am happy to report that Oregon Retinners is still in business. The last I had seen about them on here was in 2006 from Yvonne. I am hoping to hear from them next week to see about retinning my mold.
