This just in from Joe Bob in Denver:
Tom’s Home Cookin’ has this reputation in Denver for authentic Home Cookin’/Comfort food. I am not sure how they garnered this rep. More like Castle of Mediocrity.
Normally Tom’s runs out of food around 1:30 ish, so I wandered in around 1:00
and they were out of some items. Ordered the catfish with white beans, brussel
sprouts, cornbread and iced tea for $9.00. The catfish was your usual deep fried
affair which was ok…..ok is all. I can get this whiskery old stuff anywhere in Denver.
White beans were getting tired, perhaps from languishing for hours in a steamer tray. Brussel sprouts were institutional sprouts in some Nobel Sysco gloppy imitation butter liquid spew. Gack they were bad. Cornbread can’t be screwed up by anyone….so it was basic cornbread, yet somehow uninspired and dull.
Everything is served in a styro to-go box, even if you are going to sit down in the cute/funky dining area. I did like the old labels under the table covers. A distraction from the “Home Cookin’ ” in front of me.
Do yourself a huge favor, and go down the street to Ethel’s House of Soul and get the real thing. Or the other direction to La Casa de Manuel for the best Mexican food in Denver.
What do you get when you can’t sing the praises of a good meal or berate the hell out of a gawd-awful meal? You get the mediocrity blues, baby.
Downright criminal.
