Rainy ol’ Fatted Calf News

Warm glow of a chicken stew with hint of fancy mustard.
It looks as though I won’t be attending this coming Saturday’s farmers market. This blows cause they need our support this time of year. I know I know, the SF Bay Area doesn’t really have seasons (wink), but it does get cold & miserable when you gotta stand OUT IN IT ALL DAY !!! Go out and support our local growers & producers.
Take note, this week Taylor is sportin’ the Spalla Ripiene – Pork Shoulder Roast filled with Chard, Slivered Garlic and Walnuts. Wanna see? That is one badass roast baby. When I make my own pork roast, it doesn’t taste like this one. Go visit the market this week and show everyone you care too. It’s love.
Read their fine newsletter:

Ugh. Rain. You think YOU hate rain, try doing what Taylor and/or Toponia do once or twice a week at this time of year: standing out in it (under a tent, yes, but a tent that periodically fills up with water, then swooshes it all down on you, yikes), loading your truck in it, unloading your truck in it, trying to pretend you like cold coffee in it, remembering that you forgot your thermos in it, trying to stay cheerful in it, hoping you’ll sell your oh-so-delicious but super-duper perishable goods in it, oh, man, it makes us feel a little damp just thinking about it. And not in a good way. Once, back when we (and by “we”, we mean me, the one who writes these things) used to help Taylor with the market, we rememeber folding up the tent on one of the super rainy days of 2004, bending over to pick up something, and having some water spill down the back of our pants. That’s the day we heard Taylor use the term “coin slot”. Today Toponia was sayin g that she’d like to give a Prize to everyone who shows up this coming (probabably rainy) Saturday, but we have a better idea: Just show up, and buy some stuff. Dreary weather and meaty goods just go together, and this week brings a bountiful bevy of bangers and boudin and bacon and such. Sure, you might not feel like going out in the rain, but T & T will be there, waiting for you. And when you get home with your package of joy, (your Prize), you (and we!) will be glad you did.
See you at the Market!
