Meathenge hits the San Francisco Chronicle!

Fatted Calf pancetta & smooshed garlic fer saucy sauce

How did it happen? I dunno. Maybe a month ago I received an email late in the afternoon from Amanda. She was wondering if I was hip to being interviewed for an article she was interested in doing for the Food section. She offered her phone number and I called her directly. I thought it was cool because she wanted to talk in person, not via email or a phone interview. We set a date for 10am at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market. Seemed fitting eh?

That Saturday found us both at the Blue Bottle Coffee stand, I was in Berkeley and she had gone to the one in San Francisco at the Ferry Building. Whoops.
Maybe the following week at a local cafe? Yup.
Amanda and I hung out for a while talking, she writing and me picking through my fancy waffle. If nothing else we had breakfast and a good time. A few days past. I figured that was that and within a few weeks the article would hit. Nope.
Amanda wanted to know how I felt about having a photographer come by and take some shot of Meathenge Labs. YEAH !!! This was getting interesting. From what a few people told me, this would take from 10 to 20 minutes. Okay, no big deal then. Snap snap and gone. Easy peasy. It was during the week and I hadn’t planned on cooking anything. Yeah well, the day before I decided I would feed the camera monkeys. That right there, was the best decision I’ve made in a long time. Turns out Craig stayed nearly 3 hours with strobes EVERYWHERE. He got tons of shots, inside & outside. The man was impressive. No wasted time, not even once. Professional Creative Juices at a moments notice, perfection. If I hadn’t chosen to smoke a load of meat, it would have been dull, dull, dull. Not only that, Craig would have left hungry. But I did smoke meat and Craig did get lunch. From what I hear, he more than thoroughly enjoyed it.
And here we are today, with a more than huge spread in the March 9th San Francisco Chronicle, Food section. Amanda set off with something in mind and came out with the Mt. Everest of articles, she’s amazing. Amanda, you deserve more than a pat on the back for this one. I’ll give you the link to the story at SFGATE.com, but if you can, go get the real paper. Far more impressive, by leaps & bounds.
Thanks to Amanda & Craig, you should be quite proud.

  1. Hi Guy! Couldn’t happen to a nicer…
Congratulations. Very impressive and very nice looking. I’m glad our local newspapers are finally catching on to this whole food blog thing.

  2. Dr B – your pictures are great!
Mine is ok but yours is wonderful. No wonder it got the front page. Congratuations
I got smile fatigue doing my pics. My cheek started quivering. And as I was holding a glass of very cold vodka (I went though at least 2 as he took hundreds of photos), my hands were going numb.
But it was worth it for the fame, eh?
Now, where do I pick up my fortune…????

  3. Thanks! And you got some awesome ones too, don’t short yerself.
If you take a look on the front page, the smaller pic of the cow, meat & palm trees? Craig spent probably more than 20 minutes snapping off shots. Raise the cow, lower the cow. I’m a hand model!

  4. Where’s the Meat Fairy? Was she out for the day? Great pix and the actual article in the paper is awesome!

  5. Super Fantastico! I’m quite impressed as the food section is the reason I subscribe to the Chronicle. That’s one gorgeous photo of the family on the front page there and the meat picture is even prettier.

  6. Hi, Dr. B:
Great article and pics in the paper!
I love reading the Food sections and get the LA Times on Wednesday just so I can read the Food section!
Now, if there was a Fatted Calf place down here in SoCal…

  7. Hey, thanks everyone for the kind words. A day of fun, now it’s time to get back to work. The Fatted Calf Newsletter just rolled in and I gotta find a pretty picture to post!
